Keeping Your Dog Safe in Hot Weather: Essential Tips Every Owner Should Know

March 19, 2026

As temperatures rise, our four-legged friends need extra care and attention.

Dogs are far more vulnerable to heat than humans. Unlike us, they can only cool themselves by panting and through the pads of their paws — which means hot weather can become dangerous very quickly if we're not careful.

🌡️ Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke in dogs is a medical emergency. Watch out for these warning signs:

  • Excessive, heavy panting
  • Drooling more than usual
  • Glazed or red eyes
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Vomiting or collapsing
  • Loss of coordination

If you notice any of these, move your dog to a cool place immediately, offer small sips of cool (not cold) water, and contact your vet straight away.

🕐 Time Your Walks Wisely

During hot spells, walk your dog in the early morning or evening when temperatures are at their coolest. Avoid the midday heat entirely. As a general rule — if the pavement feels too hot for the back of your hand for more than five seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

💧 Fresh Water, Always

Make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water at all times — both at home and on walks. Carry a portable water bottle and a travel bowl whenever you head out.

🚗 Never Leave Dogs in Cars

Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to dangerous levels within minutes. Never leave your dog alone in a vehicle, even with a window open.

🏖️ Create Cool Spots at Home

Set up shaded, cool areas in your home and garden. A paddling pool in the garden, a damp towel to lie on, or a cooling mat can make a huge difference to your dog's comfort on a hot day.
