- ðĨ Avocado â Contains persin, which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and heart congestion.
- ð° Macadamia Nuts â Can cause weakness, hyperthermia, vomiting, and tremors.
- ðŽ Xylitol (artificial sweetener) â Found in sugar-free gum, sweets, and some peanut butters. Causes a rapid drop in blood sugar and can lead to liver failure.
- â Caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks) â Toxic to dogs' nervous system and heart. Can be fatal.
- ðš Alcohol â Even small amounts can cause vomiting, disorientation, seizures, and death.
- ð― Corn on the cob â Not toxic, but a leading cause of intestinal blockages, which can be fatal without surgery.
- ðĶī Cooked bones â Can splinter and cause choking, internal punctures, or blockages.
â ïļ What To Do If Your Dog Eats Something Toxic
Act fast. If you suspect your dog has eaten something dangerous:
- Don't wait for symptoms â Call your vet or an emergency pet poison helpline immediately.
- Note what was eaten â How much, when, and try to identify the exact plant or food.
- Do not induce vomiting unless specifically instructed by a vet â it can sometimes cause more damage.
- UK Poison Hotline: 01202 509000 (Animal Poison Line â charges may apply)
When in doubt, always call your vet. It's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your dog's life.
