Kyra and the Great Greetland Escape
Wednesday was Kyra's favourite day of the week.
Every Wednesday, Auntie Hayley clipped on her lead and they set off together down the country lanes of Greetland. Kyra was a Welsh Collie — black, white, and toffee-brown — with bright eyes that missed nothing and a heart full of loyal courage.
The morning was misty and sweet. Damp hedgerows glittered, the brook burbled under the old stone bridge, and a wood pigeon sang softly from the trees.
Coo-coo-coo. Coo-coo.
They were climbing toward the top field when Kyra stopped dead. One ear forward, one sideways. Her nose working.
Sheep. But not where they should be.
Through a gap in the old drystone wall, a whole flock was spilling out onto the lane — one, two, five, eight — tumbling like woolly clouds set loose from the sky.
'Oh my!' gasped Auntie Hayley.
Up in the field, a young Collie named Pip was doing his best — darting left and right, barking his heart out. But Pip was young, the gap was wide, and the sheep kept coming. He let out one desperate, pleading bark.
Kyra heard it.
Something ancient and true stirred deep inside her — the instinct of a hundred Welsh Collie generations, steady and sure.
She looked up at Auntie Hayley.
'Go on then,' Auntie Hayley said softly, and unclipped the lead.
Kyra flew.
She didn't chase or bark. She simply moved — calm and low, flowing around the edges of the flock like a quiet river finding its course. The sheep, surprised by her stillness, began to slow and turn. Pip fell in gratefully alongside her, and together they worked the flock — steady, patient, sure.
Back through the gate. Back up the field. Back to the place called home.
By the time Mr. Briggs the farmer came puffing up the lane with rope in hand, it was already done. He stood at the gate, mouth open, watching the last sheep settle peacefully into the grass.
'That your dog?' he puffed.
'I'm her dog walker,' said Auntie Hayley proudly.
'Trained sheepdog, is she?'
'Not a day in her life.'
Mr. Briggs shook his head in wonder, then fished a Barkwell's biscuit from his jacket pocket and held it out with a wide smile.
'For the hero of Greetland,' he said.
Kyra took it very politely.
Then she and Auntie Hayley carried on down the lane, the mist lifting over the hills, the wood pigeon still singing its Wednesday song.
Coo-coo-coo. Coo-coo
