Ruby Goes to School

One sunny morning, Ruby the golden dog trotted into Reception class with Auntie Hayley. The children sat in a circle on the bright rug, and Ruby wagged her tail.

“Today,” said Auntie Hayley, “Ruby is going to help us count all the way to ten!”

Counting to Ten

The children held up their fingers. Ruby sat very still and watched.

“One, two, three, four, five,” they counted together.

“Six, seven, eight, nine, TEN!” they cheered, and Ruby wagged her whole body.

Matching Numbers to Quantities

Auntie Hayley put out number cards. Next to each card, the children placed the right number of things.

  • 1 — one bone 🦴
  • 2 — two ears 👂👂
  • 3 — three balls ⚽⚽⚽
  • 4 — four paws 🐾🐾🐾🐾
  • 5 — five toy cars
  • 6 — six building blocks
  • 7 — seven crayons
  • 8 — eight star stickers
  • 9 — nine puzzle pieces
  • 10 — ten happy children!

Ruby sniffed each group to check. “Perfect!” said Auntie Hayley.

Counting Ruby's Barks

“Now,” whispered Auntie Hayley, “let’s count Ruby’s barks.”

Ruby took a big breath.

“Woof! Woof! Woof! Woof! Woof!”

The children counted on their fingers: five barks!

Then Ruby gave one more little “Woof!” — that made six.

“Six barks!” laughed the children. “Well done, Ruby!”

Counting to Ten Again

At the end of the lesson, the children and Ruby counted together one more time, all the way from one to ten.

“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, TEN!”

Ruby wagged her tail and gave a big, happy WOOF. School was the best place to learn to count.
